Changes management unit of “Samruk-Energy” JSC business transformation program assessed the viability of "Ekibastuz GRES-1 named after B.Nurzhanov" LLP. The working group included top management, mid-level executives and line managers.
The construction of Ekibastuz GRES-1 first facilities began in 1974. Young professionals came from all over the Soviet Union to All-Union construction. Ekibastuz GRES-1 was one of the largest coal-fired power plants not only in the USSR but also in the world.
Ekibastuz GRES-1 was managed by American company AES from 1996 to 2008. Today, thanks to the "American" period, traditions of openness, direct access to executives of all levels for even the most ordinary employees remains in the organization. Despite the age and job titles GRES-1 employees treat each other with respect, but call each other by their first names. Yuri Gerulsky the veteran of the enterprise, the deputy chief engineer of the electrical part showed us Ekibastuz GRES-1. Change management group was lucky to see one of the largest urban development enterprises what we call "from the inside".
The head of changes management unit Olzhabayuly Nayzabek presented his speech at the kick-off meeting in LLP "Ekibastuz GRES-1 named after B.Nurzhanov"; he spoke about goals and objectives in the framework of viability evaluation, after which those present at the meeting were surveyed, which is one part of the study. Changes management unit proceeded to the survey in the next stage. Current management practices in the organization were analyzed in the framework of this work; conclusions based on the analysis results as to which practices needs to be strengthened were made.
Completion of these works was followed by calibration workshop; the results of works, as well as recommendations to improve the viability of the company were presented during the workshop.
