A third hydraulic unit is commissioned at Shardarinsk HPP. A large-scale project related to complete upgrading of hydropower plant on the Syrdarya River is nearing completion. The launch of the fourth, the last in the framework of the hydraulic unit project, is planned by the end of February of the coming 2020.
A fundamental reconstruction will increase the capacity of hydropower plant by 26 percent - from the current 100 to 126 MW. Replacing the old hydro turbines of the Kharkiv plant with new ones, which were produced by the Austrian-German company ANDRITZ Hydro Gmbh, will increase the plant's output from 480 to 537 mln. kWh per annum. Along with generating an additional 57 mln. kWh / year of electricity, the new equipment will increase the service life of the hydropower plant up to 35-40 years, as well as enhance the reliability of operation of the hydropower plant and reduce the accident rate. According to the specialists of “Samruk-Energy” JSC, the technological renovation of the facility is of great importance for providing electricity to experiencing power shortages Turkestan region and increasing the efficiency of water use in the region. The total cost of the project is 38 bln. tenge. 32% of funding is secured using own funds, 68% - borrowed funds. The contractor of the project - Austrian-German Company ANDRITZ Hydro Gmbh.
Owing to the commissioning of the first two hydraulic units with a capacity of 31,5 MW each in the first half of 2019, Shardarinsk HPP hit the annual generation plan ahead of schedule. With planned 301 900 thous.kWh, electricity generation at the plant amounted to more than 403 655 thous. kWh.
Shardarinsk HPP was commissioned in 1967 with an installed capacity of 100 MW and 4 units. With a standard service life of 25 years, the plant's technological equipment has been in operation for more than 50 years, and as at the date of the modernization project commencement, the equipment depreciated almost 100%. Part of the electrical equipment, which was installed at the hydropower plant is no longer produced at the manufacturing plants and has gone out of production. From the economics and operation reliability point of view, further operation of the equipment was unfeasible. The launch of the first hydraulic unit with an increased design capacity of 31,5 MW took place in February 2019 as part of the plant’s complete modernization. The second hydraulic unit was commissioned in April 2019.
