The threat of emergencies and emergency power outages has been eliminated in Almaty in full. “Alatau Zharyk Company” JSC, a member of Almaty energy complex of “Samruk-Energy” power holding company, completed the project on transfer of loads from “Gorny Gigant” substation to upgraded “Yermensay” substation.

We would like to remind that “Gorny Gigant” substation that is located in the upper, foothill part of the city, supplied energy to residential and industrial facilities in Bostandyk, Medeu, parts of  Auezov and Talgar districts of Almaty city. This electrical installation was one of the oldest in the city. In addition, due to the maximum load on transformers at the facility, there were no possibilities of connecting new consumers. In order to ensure the reliability of power supply and prevent emergency, the Investment and Innovation Council and the Management Board of “Samruk-Energy” JSC approved the implementation of the investment stage of the project in 2016.  The total cost of construction made 6, 7 bln. tenge.

As part of the project implementation, circa 40 km. of cable lines were installed from Yermensay substation and were provided operating voltage. To connect consumers of “Gorny Gigant” substation to “Yermensay” substation, two overhead lines with a length of more than 11 km were reconstructed; high-voltage equipment for receiving, distributing and transmitting electricity were expanded and retrofitted; additionally, systems for energy accounting and emergency control and relay protection devices were installed.

The performed work resulted in the transfer of all consumers previously connected to the unreliable 220/110/10kV “Gorny Gigant” substation, including residents of “Samal”, “Kazakhfilm”, “Baganashil”, “Taugul” microdistricts etc. to the new 220/110/10 kV “Yermensay” substation.

As Mukhit Umbetov, Chairman of the Board of “Alatau Zharyk Company” JSC noted, the successful implementation of the project not only prevented possible accidents and improved the reliability of power supply of the southern capital, but also removed restrictions on connecting new consumers and increased electricity transmission volumes. According to the head of the company, with the completion of works on load transfer, the dismantling process will begin at the “Gorny Gigant” substation site.

At present, “Alatau Zharyk Company” plans to implement projects envisaged in the Company's Investment Program for 2016-2020, including reconstruction of 220/110/10 kV substation No. 7 “AHBK”, construction of 110/10 kV substation “Kokozek”, reconstruction of grids in Turksib, Auezov, Bostandyk, Zhetysu, Alatau districts of Almaty city.

It should be noted that the substation Turksib (now Zhas Qanat) was commissioned in Almaty city in June 2018. With the launch of the facility, “Samruk-Energy” JSC has completed Almaty city’s energy re-equipment program, which commenced in 2008. The new substation enabled to increase transformer capacity by 30 MVA and supply electricity to the central part of the city’s Turksib district and the new microdistrict “ Zhas Qanat”.
