The installation of the new hydraulic unit at Shardarinsk HPP has been started. The hydropower plant that was built more than 50 years ago, is experiencing the stage of fundamental retrofit
The project on retrofit of hydropower plant started in 2010 and is planned to be completed in 2020. The German company Andritz Hydro is the contractor. Shardarinsk hydropower plant is tasked with updating all four hydraulic units.
According to the project, the hydraulic units No. 2 and No. 1 will be updated first. As of today, their assembly has been completed and the new equipment is installed.
The project will increase the capacity of Shardarinsk HPP from 100 to 126 MW, update obsolete equipment, which will enable to significantly improve operational safety, reduce maintenance costs and increase electricity sales.
While installation works are in progress, the plant continues to operate – hydraulic units No. 3 and No. 4 are in operation, they will be updated during the second stage. After completion of the retrofit, the life of the hydropower plant will increase and will make 35-40 years.
"Shardarinsk HPP" JSC was commissioned on October 10, 1967. The installed capacity is 100 MW; number of units - 4 pcs, the average annual output is 377 million kW. Shardarinsk HPP being a part of Naryn-Syrdarya cascade, has an important water and economic value - irrigation, power industry, flood control. The location of the plant is in the middle reaches of Syrdarya river.
Throughout the operation of Shardarinsk HPP, the maximum amount of electricity produced was during the snowmelt flood in 1969 - 648.1 million kW / h. This record figure was hit in 2010 - 670.5 million kW / h of electricity was produced using old equipment of Shardarinsk HPP.
